Casino Ponte 16 closed on 29 November 2025.

The Sofitel did not. Neither did the restaurants, leisure facilities or the waterfront resort itself.

That makes Ponte 16 an interesting case for Macao. The city has spent years trying to expand tourism and entertainment beyond gaming. Ponte 16 is now being forced to test what that looks like at property level.

The first results suggest the transition will not be easy.

Before the closure, Casino Ponte 16 operated 109 gaming tables: 100 mass-market and nine high-limit tables.

In the first half of 2025, Success Universe's share of profit from the associates operating Ponte 16 was approximately HK$49 million.

A year later, that contribution has reversed.

Success Universe expects its consolidated loss for the first half of 2026 to increase by approximately 50%–70% from the HK$34 million loss recorded a year earlier. The company identified losses from its Ponte 16 associates as the main reason.

The final interim results are due later this month, so the complete post-casino economics are not yet available.

But the direction is already significant: removing the casino did not simply remove one attraction from the resort. It removed an important contributor to the investment.

What makes the comparison more interesting is that Ponte 16 is making this transition during a strong period for Macao tourism.

Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 averaged approximately 87% occupancy in 2025, only slightly below 88% in 2024.

Macao, meanwhile, received a record 40.07 million visitors in 2025, up 14.7%. Non-gaming visitor spending increased 6.3% to MOP80.12 billion.

Success Universe is now trying to capture more of that spending through hospitality, food, entertainment and other non-gaming activities at Ponte 16.

So far, however, strong tourism has not prevented the property's contribution to the group from deteriorating after the casino disappeared.

That distinction matters.

Macao's diversification strategy makes sense across an entire city.

More hotels, restaurants, concerts, exhibitions and attractions give visitors more reasons to stay and spend.

For an individual resort, replacing gaming economics is harder.

A hotel room can only be sold once each night. Restaurants and entertainment venues have limited capacity. Gaming can generate repeated revenue from the same floor space and customer during a visit.

That does not mean non-gaming investment cannot work. It means gaming and non-gaming revenue are not economically interchangeable.

Ponte 16 is now providing a rare opportunity to observe that difference.

Macao can have record visitor numbers, rising non-gaming spending and, simultaneously, a resort whose financial contribution deteriorates after losing its casino.

The closure already had a major accounting impact.

Success Universe moved from a HK$93.4 million profit in 2024 to a HK$410.4 million loss in 2025, including a HK$340.7 million impairment related to its interests in Ponte 16 following the casino closure.

That impairment should not be confused with the recurring economic value of the casino.

The more revealing numbers will come now.

Ponte 16 still has the Sofitel, restaurants, leisure facilities, an established tourism brand and its Inner Harbour location. Success Universe has also said it remains committed to the property.

What it no longer has is gaming.

That turns Ponte 16 into something more interesting than another satellite-casino closure.

It is becoming a real-world test of how much value a Macao resort can generate from the other side of the integrated-resort model.

Can hospitality, entertainment and tourism build a compelling business when the casino is no longer part of the integration?

Ponte 16 may give Macao an answer.
